About Mary Telfer, MFA

Picture
Mary Telfer is an artist whose work explores feminism, animal advocacy, and systems of power through painting, photography, collage, and socially engaged art. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Midwest and New England, and her research has been presented at conferences including The Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (SLSA).

She received her MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts after returning to graduate school following a long career as an artist and educator. Alongside her studio practice, she has curated exhibitions, developed socially engaged art projects, judged regional exhibitions, and taught adults art for more than two decades. Whether working in the studio or with a community, she is interested in how art can encourage us to look more closely, question assumptions, and make visible what is often overlooked.

Teaching has become an extension of her studio practice rather than something separate from it. She founded The Creative Collective, an online membership for artists seeking encouragement, thoughtful challenges, and a supportive creative community. Through courses, workshops, and weekly art experiences, she helps artists develop both technical confidence and a deeper connection to their own creative voice.

Her work and teaching are rooted in the belief that art isn't about innate talent—it's about paying attention, taking risks, asking better questions, and making space for curiosity. Whether she's creating work for an exhibition or guiding someone through their first piece of art, the goal is the same: to help people see differently.

Whether you're here to explore her artwork or learn alongside her, welcome. Thanks for stopping by.
