Pastel Art Session | May 20 – June 24
This six-week session is all about contrast and emotion: power meets peace. We'll focus on exploring energetic, expressive water paired with calm, open skies. Think crashing waves under soft sunsets, rivers in motion beneath blue stillness, or abstract water forms flowing beneath quiet skies.
This theme invites you to play with mark-making, layering, and texture in your water areas—while exploring stillness, light, and atmosphere in your skies. You’ll get to build your own visual vocabulary: bold lines vs. soft blends, saturated vs. muted colors, and movement vs. rest.

🎯 Goals for this session:
  • Explore water as movement: crashing, swirling, flowing, bubbling
  • Develop softness and restraint in the skies—negative space can be powerful
  • Layer color and light to build contrast and depth
  • Try expressive techniques like scumbling, scratching, or using unexpected tools
  • Optional: create a mini-series of 3-6 pieces that explore variations on this theme

Wild Waters - Serene Skies
6-week Zoom class: 
May 20, 27 & June 3, 10, 17 & 24, 2025
Tuesday mornings from 11:00AM – 1:00PM CST.
$150 for the six-week class (or 2 payments of $75)

Every few weeks, I’ll share photo references (realistic or abstract-leaning—you choose how to use them). You can follow along with the prompts, reinterpret them in your style, or combine elements into something entirely your own. OR you can use your own photos which can make your art more personal. 

Suggested supplies to have on hand:
  • Some type of pastel paper about 11" x 14". I absolutely LOVE PastelMat. You can buy it in single sheets or pads.
  • Soft pastels and hard pastels. I use and recommend Unison hand-rolled soft pastels and Prismacolor (hard) pastels.​
  • A surface (table, board, or easel) to work on.
  • Either the image I email you to work from or one of your own.
  • A smooth non-textured rag (I use a soft t-shirt cut up to about 4” x 6”) and/or pastel blending sticks, tortillons.​
  • A good cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa to savor as you create.
